Beginner Courses

Our beginners' course  provides a relaxed and friendly environment to learn the basics of archery,  safety rules, archery etiquette, basic equipment knowledge and scoring.

We run beginner's courses from March through to October, with a maximum number of 12 participants per course. The 2026 dates are:

  • 18th April
  • 6th June
  • 11th July
  • 12th September
  • 10th October

The course is Archery GB approved and successful completion allows participants to join The Howard Bowmen, or any other Archery GB affiliated club (subject to local rules). Highlights are:

  • The course is on a single Saturday so you don't have to commit to multiple days.
  • All equipment and coaching is provided, as are refreshments, but please bring a packed lunch.
  • One-to-one coaching by Archery GB qualified coaches so everybody gets the our full attention.
  • We also demonstrate compound, longbow and Asiatic bow styles.
  • Its a fun day.

The cost of the course is £90 per person.

The course places a strong emphasis on making sure you develop as an archer, whatever your ability at the start and by the end of the day you'll have learned the fundamental techniques for shooting an Olympic-style recurve bow safely and independently alongside others.

The minimum age that we accept is 9 years at the start of the course (there is no maximum age) and children must be accompanied by an adult. We strongly recommend an adult accompanying a child also does the beginners course as it is a great family sport and adults have to accompany a child when they are a member at the club.

This is just the start of your archery journey. Once you join Howard Bowmen further coaching is available free of charge and you can continue to use the club equipment free of charge.

If you are interested in attending a beginner’s course, please contact Mr L. Miles, the Beginner’s Course organiser at l.miles@btinternet.com.
